New Forum for Former Laestadians, XLLL

In response to the suggestions for a forum, I've started one over at Yahoo -- click above or the logo in the sidebar at right. When you subscribe to the forum (with a real or assumed name), you can choose to have your email address hidden. Please sign up and launch a topic.

  1. This sight is awesome for us that need to know there are others out there. I think it will still be checked regularly. Is there anyway to make a main page here with all of the topics? If you can do the other, go for it, we will check that too:)and it would be easier to check topics and new posts instead of trying to search for one. And please don't change your name, we sort of get used to them. Wish I could come up with one that would be fitting for me. For now, it is better to remain anon tho. Thanks again for starting THIS one!

  2. hmmm, i cant seem to make a reply that will be viewed by everyone. As far as i can tell, you can make a post for everyone to see, but all the replys to the original post are sent only to the author via email.(again, as far as i can tell). Maby it would be a good idea to start our new page with a true forum, like www.bravenet.com -this one looks like a good one.

  3. I tried signing on to the new forum, but it wouldn't accept my name. I tried six versions and it said all are taken. Aren't the names for this new site only?

  4. exLLC, it appears that currently the forum is moderated, meaning that new posts don't show up until approved by the moderator.

sisu, the names are for "Yahoo Groups," which comprise thousands of groups. So your name may very well be taken.

My two cents: I think the group should not be moderated, as it delays the flow of discussion.

  5. Hi all! I think the yahoo forum is a very good idea.. yup, I tried lots of names before finding one.. I added numbers behind the name and that worked. And I tried posting and saw that it is moderated.. there is a delay before you will see your post. It will work out well but might take a little getting used to. My 2 cents.

  6. Okay, Tomte, you got it. In this case I will not go by my maxim of "moderation in all things." The settings have been changed so posts do not need approval before appearing.

Rather than get new posts by email, is it better to subscribe to the xml feed?

  7. I did some looking in the help, and it looks like yahoo groups only lets you have an XML feed if the group is a "public" group. I suppose whether or not to have the group be that open dependsd on the nature of the conversations that take place. Right now you can't see the messages unless you've signed up. If it's public then anyone can look at the messages, even without signing up.

  8. Thanks, Tomte. Seems there is a big advantage to being public if it allows subscriptions, since email is so vulnerable these days.

  9. Yes, and a catch-22. Having it closed would seem to protect the Email addresses of the participants from harvesting by spam bots. But having it open would allow notification and participation without having to give up one's email address in the first place.

  10. Hmmmm. I vote for open, since it is not only spam bots but infectious fellow members from whom I need protection. So folks, if you want to edit your XLLL membership to hide your email address, you can do that. Then you can subscribe to the XML feed (first you'll need a reader; I suggest bloglines.com).

  11. The only thing you lose by having it open is that those who choose to post by Email leave their addresses open to harvesting. However I posted by Email 30 minutes ago and my post still hasn't "come through," meanwhile other posts (I assume made through the web site) have, so maybe posting by Email is not all it's cracked up to be.

Another good RSS reader is the Mozilla Thunderbird Email client. It's nice to have the feeds and Email in the same program.

  12. I just got the RSS feed set up in my reader, and noticed that it doesn't contain the complete posting for each entry, just a brief description.

If this is a setting that can be changed, I'd much appreciate it.

    Thanks!

  13. Tomte, I can't find a place to adjust this setting, so it seems Yahoo allows only for "headline syndication" . . . but I'll keep exploring.

  14. Tomte ~ at the top of the page there are choices, click on expanded. It will bring up the whole comment.
Also I was wondering, if my email is hidden then if I post, it won't show correct?
    Thanks

  15. Hey...
Are people posting here? We do need a place to chat and support each other. I have forwarded this site to several people who need to see this.

I am a former OALC church person and find that being on the "outside" causes many stares at family functions. It is funny to say the least.

Do others have the same reaction from relatives?

    thanks
