Technical Problems

Regrettably (or happily, depending on your views), users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer are not able to see much of this site. In fact, if you are using IE, this is probably the only post you are able to read.

Please consider using Mozilla Firefox or another Linux-based browser. You can download Firefox for free here.

I've been told by techie friends that: (1) Internet Explorer is evil and (2) the alternatives are more stable, more secure, and more fun (lots of extensions, themes, and add-ons). So there you have it.

I've also been told that migrating this site over to Wordpress would be a good idea, but the very thought exhausts me. Maybe when the kids are off to college and I'm staring at an empty nest, in about 10 years.

Meanwhile, if you have any low-energy clues for how to improve the site, let me know.

UPDATE: My bad. Cheeks red. Turns out I mangled some "span class" code halfway through Friday's post. Thanks for the clue, Anonymous; it was a very low-energy fix :-)

  2. This is strange. I can read the current comments if I click on the second listing of Free's blog.

  3. Yes, it started with the Friday post. Now I can see today's post and the top half of the Friday post.

  4. Everything seems to be back to normal now, and IE is fine again. My techie son told me that the glitch was almost surely something the blog folks did in an upgrade, and many of them are anti-Microsoft.

  5. Good you got it fixed! :) I was already wondering maybe you'd decided to delete all the older post for some reason...

As for Firefox and Mozilla, I've tried them and probably would be able to get used to them, but I'm not allowed to use them at work (it would of course be ok to use them at home), only "Exploder" is allowed. Maybe there are also others in such a strict security environment, so I hope you'll continue to keep your blog IE compatible.

  7. I will be in Naselle! I haven't missed this in several years. I just hope they have juustoleipä (squeaky cheese) this year!

  8. Free, have you seen the YouTube video featuring Levan Polkka by Loituma? My daughter emailed me the link - perhaps you could create a link to it (I have no idea how one does those things). I LOVED it. I am going to order the CD (Beautiful Things). It received ***** and some wonderful write-ups: features kantele and some take-offs on the Kalevala. MTH

  9. Glad you figured out what the problem was. I was beginning to think this was a sign of the times or that this was from almighty above that something (or this blog) shouldnt be read. By the way, my tongue is poking my cheek and it is starting to hurt.

  10. MTH, I love that video, too . . . Ilmarinen shared it here on this site a couple of years ago.

To you lucky ones going to Naselle, please share your experiences. Is there a Sami exhibit this year? Is there a forum on Laestadius?

To anonymous, better tongue in cheek than foot in mouth!

  11. I bought the Loituma "Things of Beauty" and "In the Moonlight" CDs quite awhile ago and don't know if they've done anything since. I also picked up a CD by Värttinä entitled "Iki" that I really like. I like listening to Finnish music that I can understand!

If you like kantele, there's a CD entitled "Vilhon Vintillä" (or Wilho's Attic" by our own Washington state treasure, Wilho Saari of Naselle. Wilho not only is a recognized master of the kantele, he even teaches kantele to the kids in the Naselle school. If I lived closer to him, I would own a kantele and be learning how to play!

  12. Mmmm, the comment about squeaky cheese reminds me of when my mom used to make it. It's nothing like the "bread" cheese that I bought at the grocery store that was supposed to be like it.

Is there anyplace you can order it online that anyone knows of?

  13. The Tillamook Cheese Factory in Oregon will ship it to you :)

  14. Finn fest starts today in Duluth, MN. Tarja Halonen will be there, and there are rumors about the Conan O'Brien show there for the opening this evening. Alas, I can't be there until Friday--but if I see anything good, I'll send it to Free for posting.
