Three Free E-books about Laestadianism

Warren H. Hepokoski's research on the Laestadian movement has been mentioned here before, but I thought I'd highlight these links to his writings again since being recently made aware that his books are also available as PDF files for off-line reading.

Lars Levi Laestadius and the Revival in Lapland, by Warren H. Hepokoski (HTML) (PDF)

The Laestadian Movement: Disputes and Divisions 1861 - 2000, by Warren H. Hepokoski (HTML) (PDF)

The Laestadian Movement: Background Writings and Testimonies, Warren H. Hepokoski (PDF only)

  1. LLLreader here: I have 3 copies of "Correspondence of Judge Fred M. Brown and Fremont Ward, Discussing Christian Science and the Salvation of Men". It's dated 1925 and contains copies of letters written between the two men. I was struck by the affection between the two, although they disagree on what it means to be saved--Mr. Ward being Christian Science and Mr. Ward being OAL. If anyone wants these little pamphlets I would be glad to give them away.

  2. I've just started reading the first e-book, and I'm finding the section that describes the Readers and the theological climate Laestadius found himself in fascinating. While you can place Laestadius within the greater Reader movement, there was a lot more diverse theological views amongst various Readers than I ever imagined.

  3. LLLreader: I have a book of Laestadius's "House Postilla Sermons" with a foreword by Kaleb A. Wuollet published in Cokato Minn. March 5, 1894. In the forward he writes that the handwritten sermons were written for house gatherings, reading examinations, and communions by LLL. Further, the sermons were left to LLL's widow, who did not publish them. They were then given to her daughter Elizabeth, who sent them to her sister's daughter Selma and her husband, Albert Nelson in America, with the request that they be published. The translation and printing into English took place in 1939. Arthur Niska wrote an introduction in which he states "Laestadius was the angel who begin to cry at the dawn of the opening of the sixth seal. This thesis is supported by an earthquake having taken place at the moment when a slave of sin was released, by the power and merits of the Savior: or when the keys of the kingdom of heaven were again put into right practice. Rev. 6:12 Mattthew 16:19". The translators were Edward Sunberg, Alma Uskoski, and Arthur Niska. Does anyone want it?

  4. I'd like that House Postilla if nobody else does. I used to have a copy but somehow, somewhere it got away from me.

  5. LLLreader to cvow: I just realized I have two copies. How should I get one to you? I have Free's address. Still one up for grabs----

  6. LLLreader, thanks! Send Free an email and ask her for mine -- she's got it, but I don't want to post it here. Then drop me a note and I'll give you my address.

  7. Someone might be interested in this website? http://pietanpublications.com/index.html

cvow, I haven't forgotten you :/, life is getting in the way.

  8. Someone might be interested in the story about a Finnish girl who left the Conservative Laestadian movement:

The story is published in Helsingin Sanomat, and you find it in Finnish in our networked blog also:

    Kind regards,

PS. Your contributions are welcome, please mail to verkosto@luukku.com

  9. Kiitos, Freepathways! Se on mukava kun nähden kuinka me kävellen samalla tiellä siellä Suomessa niinkuin täällä Amerikkassa!

  10. I Am sorry for this off topic posting, but I just read a column by Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize winner in economy, in New York Times.

You can read his opinion here:

    He writes among other:

"But more important, the episode illustrated an essential truth about the state of American politics: at this point, the guiding principle of one of our nation’s two great political parties is spite pure and simple. If Republicans think something might be good for the president, they’re against it — whether or not it’s good for America."

Paul Krugman is one of the worlds smartest people, and he is considered an absolute authority in economics everywhere in the world.

But you don't have to be a Nobel price winner to realize there must be something wrong with US politics. I have realized it by just watching some TV-clips on Youtube.

Are there any explanations to how this great country has come to this situation, or is this just business as usual in US?

  11. If you click on my Nick you will see another politics related video which I simply have no words to describe.

In Europe this politican would sit in jail.

It's horrifying that some US Christians support the death penalty. It would not go thru the mind of a Christian in Europe to support death penalty.

Death penalty just cheapens human life, and has no proved effect on criminality.

  12. Hi Freepathways! Thanks for the link. I look forward to checking out your site. We've had some discussion on the film and the story you referenced here and here

  13. Here is another off topic posting.

I think this social experiment ABC Primetime did, which can be seen, by clicking on my Nick, gives a very good impression of Americans.

I think the same experiment in Finland would not have given the same result. Finns are generally very reserved and would not have spoke out. They would just have stranded there a little uncomfortable, but not said anything.

    That well I know Finns.

This video also reminds me about my visits to Texas and the casual, straightforward and friendly people I met there.

I do think Islam is a destructive religion, but as the Americans on the video, I believe you have to be fair also to people you don't like.

  14. Hi all, thank you Tomte & cvow for your kind messages. Even in Finnish, so freindly of you. Our group managing the Omat Polut blog would be interested in your findings among the books and other sources in criticism towards the religion violence and pressing. Good luck for your website learning to live free. Let's keep reading and really LIVE, free! :-)

  15. LLLReader, is that second copy of House Postilla Sermons still available?
