Welcome, Amelia

Please join me in welcoming my new friend Amelia as a guest contributor! I promised her she need only talk when she feels like it, and I do hope she feels like it soon. Meanwhile, enjoy this photo of Bonobo chimps at play . . .

  3. Oh, and btw-
I'm not posting this as a solicitation for help for the Jena 6, I would just like for people to know what's going on.

It's amazing that this kind of thing still goes on, honestly.

  4. Your story is horrifying.
And speaking of Amelia... I love her, too. And I'm related to troll? That freaks me out :).

  5. Thanks anonymous.

I appreciate the heads up. I did a search in my local newspaper and couldn't find one reference to it. That's appalling.

And welcome, Amelia, to the fray.

  6. Thank you all very much for your warm welcome! *bowing*

Free2bme knows how to get me talking now-- just post some cute animal pics. :-)

While growing up, I thought I was related to everybody at church, so I'm not surprised to be recognized by a few of you! (p.s. If you email me privately, I will still respect your public anonymity. I love you too, Helena! and you know I love my neblings, anon!)

  7. Just to comment on the "White Tree" story, remember that you're only getting one side of the story. Note the author. I'm not taking sides, just pointing out that this story is written from one extreme side of the story.

  8. I do wish that story was an overblown, one-sided, "extremist" rant, but the facts are being reported in other places (although the American mainstream media is taking its sweet time, being preoccupied with drug-addled starlets and heiresses).

I wouldn't doubt our European friends knew of this story before we did.

Here is a link to a blog that questions that MSM sloth and includes links to news stories about the Jena 6.

And here is a link to an article in our local paper.

That bumper sticker that says "If you aren't angry, you aren't paying attention" seems apropos here.

  9. I have an accute interest in the political and social happenings of Louisiana, and I try to gather my info from as many sources as possible before I take a story and share it with people.

It's fairly typical for racist people to say that victims of Racism and double standards are overreacting when certain instances are brought to light.

If it was up to the City of Jena, these boys that did nothing more than to have a schoolyard scuffle after being harrassed for months would be rotting away in a prison for 20+ years for no other reason than that they had the utter nerve to strike a caucasian, regardless of what was being done to them.

The victim of the fight in question whom the African American kids are charged with trying to kill (deadly weapon being tennis shoes- what a joke) was released from the medical center within hours of the fight and attended a function that night with not much more than a couple of bruises. (2nd degree attempted murder is an appropriate charge for a small to medium sized scuffle between a group of highschool kids? Thank God I was white growing up in La.....sigh)

Aside from the hate crime of hanging nooses, which in itself is a very LOW blow, especially in Louisiana, mind you- This whole case is nothing more than a bunch of backwater-hicktown white people trying to keep "Their Blacks" in line with political power.

The same schoolyard fight, if fought between all white students, would probably have been broken up and forgot about within a couple of days/weeks. Therein lies the rub.

Tossing a bunch of young men's futures away over a schoolyard fight where no one was severely injured beyond a bruise or two is a travesty and a mockery of the American justice system.

It's all pretty black and white, actually.
(see what I did there? I know I'm punny)
    :)

  10. Anon-

I am curious. What do you know about Bill Quigley, the author of the posted article?

You said to "Note the Author", almost as a possible discredit to the story.

  11. Free, my postings keep disappearing! Help!

  12. Wouldn't you know, the last cry for help went through and not my other postings...

There is a three-page article about Jena in the current issue of Newsweek. It is written by Cretel Kovach and Arian Campo-Flores, if that helps our protesting poster.

  13. Wow. I am very intrigued by everything that I am reading. I never realized that there were so many other people in the same situation as myself; struggling to find myself in the aftermath of leaving OALC. Do people on here contact one another via email or any other method, or is all communication done through blogging? I am so happy that I found this site.

  14. HKS, Helena,
I am quite sure that I know who you are and would love to get in contact with you somehow. If possible, I would rather reveal my identity in a more private setting.

  15. Hi curious,

It is more spam friendly to encode it that way.
I'd love to hear from you.

  16. So, anon 11:58, can you share with us what your point is about the author?

Actually Bill Quigley is a human rights lawyer and a law professor at Loyola University in New Orleans. Here's a link to read more about him: http://law.loyno.edu/~quigley/

He sounds like the kind of person I would be proud to call a friend.

  17. I read the Newsweek article. I hope somebody keeps us updated on that awful situation. While I was walking in the Relay For Life, I started thinking that no self respecting OALC member would ever be part of such a thing. It gripes me that while the church members have access to all that this country has to offer, they don't make any effort to give back. We have a responsibility to care for one another, to care for our county, and to care for our earth. Most other churches see this as a necessary part of their duty to God. LLLreader

Back on June 11 you related your
zero response from God as per

This might be of some help.

  19. And today, Mychal Bell was released on $45,000 bail. Finally.

I would have loved to be down in Louisiana on Thursday. Change is long overdue.
